The Wisdom of Man
Cor. 1 1:17-31
I: Man’s Wisdom Hides the Cross of Christ.
1. Not by night nor by power, but by my Spirit saith the Lord of host.
2. Our leaders in the schools of our land have hid the cross by the wisdom of man.
3. “The preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness.”
4. God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish. (Job 38).
5. The wisdom of the world can never know God except thru the preaching of the cross.
6. Jews require a sign and Greeks seek after wisdom.
7. The power and wisdom of God is manifested in the cross of Christ.
II: The Foolishness of God is Wiser Than Men.
1. Not many wise, not many noble, not many mighty according to the flesh.
a. It was foolish Israel to leave by the Red Sea in to a howling wilderness.
b. It was foolish to march around the walls of Jericho and blow a rams horn.
c. It was foolish for Gidden to reduce his army from 32,000 – 300.
d. It was foolish for Hezekiah to defy the army of Sennacherib.
e. It was foolish to leave the great commission to a little band of fear-stricken men and women, but the foolishness of God is wiser than men.
III: God Gives No Room for the Flesh to Glory.
1. All boasting is excluded.
2. All fleshly wisdom is foolishness.
3. God works best where the flesh is weakest.
4. The only room for boasting is to boast and glory in the goodness of God.
