Why are You Afraid?

Mark 4:35-41,    John 1 4:18,    Luke 12:4, and    Psalm 34:4

“And He said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith?”
Mark 4:1-40

When Fear comes in, Faith goes out.

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear, because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” John 1 4:18

“And I say, unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.” Luke 12:4

“I sought the Lord, and he heard me, delivered me from all my fears.”

I: Fear is Universal.
1. Basil King in “The Conquest of Fear.” says: “Everyone is loving or working in fear. The mother is afraid for her children. The father is afraid for his business. The Clerk is afraid of his boss or his competitor. There is hardly a man who is not afraid that some other man will do him a bad turn. There is hardly a woman who is not afraid that things she craves may be denied her, or that what she loves may be snatched away… I am ready to guess that all the miseries wrought by sin and sickness put together would not equal those we bring on ourselves by the means which perhaps we do least to counteract. We are not sick all the time, we are not sinning all the time, but all the time all of us or practically all of us are afraid of someone or something.”

2. Fear drives men mad.
3. Fear breaks the body.
4. Fear breaks friendships.
5. Fear wrecks the home.
6. Fear drives the rotten-tot of Africa to make a sacrifice to many evil spirits.

II: Fear Under Control is a Blessing.

2. Normal fear is an instinct of great value to the beast Kingdom.
3. Normal fear performs a useful function in the child’s life.
4. Fear makes the druggist more careful and the Doctor to double check.

III: Fear out of Control is a Danger.
1. Gideon was instructed to send home those that were afraid.
2. The Doctor that lives in fear of what he might do will soon break, the druggist will be calling the Nurse to send back the Medicine.
3. The skilled hand will shake under fear.
4. Fear is a wild storm of destruction when we let it loose.

IV: Fear came by Sin.
1. Adam and Eve hid themselves.
2. The King of Babylon shook for fear.
3. Man became afraid when his connection with God was broken.

V: Christianity does not Keep Us from Fearful Things.

It is not a promise of exemption.
