Matt. 6:1-7, Luke 18:11-<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Pharisees were a religious party numbering about 6,000 and holding great power over the Jewish nation. They were noted for their self-conceit, arrogance, long prayers, tithing, fasting, & keeping of tradition.<\/p>\n

I: Some Things that the<\/strong> Scriptures Tell Us & the Talmud:
\n<\/strong>1. The Talmud says: “There were seven kinds of Pharisees.”
\na. Shechermites<\/strong>: Who keep the law for what it will prophet them.
\nb. Tumblers: <\/strong>Always hanging down the head & dragging the feet.
\nc. Bleeders: <\/strong>Who to avoid looking at women shut their eyes and so bump their heads.
\nd. Mortars: <\/strong>Wearing caps in the form of mortars covering the eyes from seeing impurities.
\n2. Jesus constantly opposed them.
\na. <\/strong>“Woe unto you scribes, and Pharisees, hypocrites.”
\nb. <\/strong>“Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees.”
\nc. <\/strong>Ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup.
\nd. <\/strong>“Ye lovers of the upper seats.”
\n3. Nicodemus, Semion, & Paul were Pharisees.
\n4. They condemned the blind man that was made to see.
\n5. They brought the woman taken in adultery.
\n6. They led the crowd that crucified Jesus.<\/p>\n

II: Their Prayer Life, Alms Giving & Fasting.
\n<\/strong>1. Their prayer life. Luke 18:11.
\na.<\/strong> Loved to pray standing in the synagogue.
\n\u00a0 b. <\/strong>Prayed on the street corners.
\n\u00a0 c. <\/strong>Lectured God on their goodness or bewailed their unworthiness.
\n\u00a0 d. <\/strong>Condemned others in their prayers.
\n2. Their alms-gibing. Matt. 6:1-.<\/strong>
\na. <\/strong>Sounded a trumpet to call attention.
\nb. <\/strong>Gave to receive notice of men.
\nc. <\/strong>Received their rewards.
\n3. Their fasting:
\na. <\/strong>Fasted twice in the week.
\nb. <\/strong>Displayed their fasting by hair, face, clothes, walk, and look.<\/p>\n

III: Except Your Righteousness Exceed:
\n<\/strong>1. “Ye have heard … thou shalt not kill, but I say, Whosoever is angry.”
\n2. “Ye have heard … not to commit adultery, but I say, Whosoever looketh…”
\n3. “Ye have heard … an eye for an eye, but I say, whosoever shall smite.”
\n4. The Christians alms-giving … “Not thy left hand…” The widow woman put in her gift.
\n5. When thou prayest enter into closet. Yet Jesus prayed in public.
